HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – Jacob Ellis, a native of Hudsonville, Michigan, received a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship worth $180,000, Nov. 17.
While the Navy awards thousands of NROTC scholarships every year, Ellis was awarded an Immediate Scholarship Reservation (ISR) scholarship. ISR scholarships are awarded by unit commanding officers and are only given to a select few applicants.
Cmdr. Paolo Singh, commanding officer of Navy Talent Acquisition Group Heartland, awarded Ellis the scholarship after reviewing his application and conducting an in-person interview.
“Jacob is a very impressive young man,” Singh said. “It’s a privilege for me to award him this scholarship. He’s worked extremely hard to get to this point, and I’m certain he’ll continue to work hard and ultimately become an excellent leader for the Navy.”
Including Ellis, Singh has only awarded two of these scholarships this year to students in Indiana and Michigan.
“It’s a huge honor,” Ellis said. “I feel like I worked really hard for this, and it’s good to see everything come together.”
Ellis is currently a senior at Hudsonville High School. He hopes to be accepted to the University of Michigan. After he earns his degree, he will be commissioned as a Navy officer.
“I think that it allows me personally on my life journey to accomplish positive change in the world, and it’s a really powerful way to do that and hopefully have a positive impact on the world,” Ellis said.
Ellis said the decision to follow this path took a few years, but it began years ago when he was still in middle school.
“My initial steps came from visiting the Naval Academy campus when I was in seventh grade on a family trip,” he said.
Being selected for the ISR scholarship meant Ellis skipped the usual process where his NROTC scholarship application would be reviewed with thousands of other applicants by a board of officers.
