Ruck march builds resiliency, empowers through information

As the sun rose over the desert hills on October 29, members of Area Support Group-Jordan and service members and civilians assigned to the Joint Training Center packed their rucksacks with 25 pounds of water bottles. Over the course of three miles, they lightened their load as they gained information about resources offered at JTC.

“The ‘Lighten Your Load’ ruck march symbolized the powerful positive effects of available resources our Army offers to help relieve the heavy burden of stress many carry when stationed away from loved ones,” ASG-J Commander Col. Toni K. Sabo, said.

Participants stopped at five checkpoints along the route, removing five pounds of waters at each stop, physically reducing their load to symbolize the stress relief experienced when we call upon others to help us. The checkpoints were sponsored by representatives from behavior health, medical support, the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, equal opportunity and spiritual health.

As they removed water, participants learned of the services available to them and where to find help, if they need it.

“The event builds readiness and resiliency by addressing all aspects of the physical, mental and spiritual needs of service members and civilians stationed away from home,” said Lt. Col. Tommie Pickens, ASG-J command chaplain. “We are one big family and we are empowering our family members with the information they need to improve their mental, physical and emotional health.”

Above all, Pickens said, the event emphasized that it is ok to ask for help when needed. “We are here for our family, if they need help.”
