ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England - The United States Air Force is built on mentorship. Brick by brick, every senior leader was built up from their experiences as an Airman into who they are today. It falls on the shoulders of those past Airmen to help guide and mold the leaders of tomorrow.

Newly enlisted Liberty Wing Airmen were recently given the opportunity to meet with senior leaders to receive general guidance and advice in face-to-face mentoring sessions during the First Term Airmen Course Mentorship Program at Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England, Oct. 22, 2021.

During the FTAC mentorship program, senior noncommissioned officers from the tri-base area mentor first-term Airmen, utilizing their wisdom to answer any questions they may have about life in the military, typically partnering Airmen with mentors outside of their own careers.

“One thing that I noticed before starting the program was, other than basic in-processing related guidance, new Airmen across the tri-base population didn’t have a link to the Senior NCO core directly or know what we can provide,” said Master Sgt. William Daugherty, the FTAC Mentorship Program developer. “Explaining where you came from, your career, getting back to the basics, and remembering the needs that you had as an Airman, are paramount in this program.”

The Airmen participants in the program are also offered the option to request leaders that they can strongly relate to in order to better tailor to their needs.

“By being given the opportunity to request mentors with certain experiences, we can get the advice that we want to further our careers in a way that better fits our personal goals,” said Airman 1st Class Jaylen Greer, a former attendee of the mentorship program.

More than 500 Airmen have participated in the FTAC mentorship program since its start in December 2020, with projections of 620 participants by the end of this year.

“As we build relationships across the Air Force, these future leaders will remember the inputs from this program as they take us to the next level,” said Daugherty.

By introducing Airmen to senior leaders from across the tri-base area early on, the program aims to provide them direct feedback and guidance from outside of their respective career fields, strengthening the relationships between the Air Force’s current and future leaders.
