INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana's Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger, received notification that Soldiers of the 2-238th General Aviation Support Battalion are scheduled to return the afternoon of Oct. 31 to Stout Field in Indianapolis.
Nearly 150 Soldiers from three different companies based in Shelbyville, Ind., have conducted army aviation operations in Kuwait and Iraq in support of coalition counterinsurgency operations.
The companies deployed were Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Company D and Company E. The battalion is commanded by Lt. Col. Bernard C. Kruse; the unit's top enlisted Soldier is Command Sgt. Maj. David W. Jordan.
During their year-long deployment, the unit supported an aggressive aviation presence that daily keeps thousands of military and civilians off convoy routes that are historically dangerous for counterinsurgency personnel.
In April 2008, nearly 140 Guardsmen from the battalion returned from their year-long deployment to Iraq. Those Soldiers conducted medical evacuation missions covering four forward operating bases.
In fall 2005, battalion Soldiers supported Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in Louisiana and Mississippi. In January 2004 battalion troops mobilized to Bosnia-Herzegovina to support the peacekeeping mission there, returning in December of the same year.
"Look at the operation tempo for these young men and women and you begin to get a very clear picture of the challenges we're facing," said Maj. Gen Umbarger, "and you get an even better picture of what kind of Soldiers fill the ranks of the Indiana National Guard. I hope every Hoosier joins me in thanking them for another job well done."
Family, friends and media are invited to attend the welcome home ceremony at Stout Field, Building 9, 2002 S. Holt Rd, Indianapolis, Ind., 46241.
Media can expect follow-up reports as the actual time of arrival draws closer.
