On any given morning during the multi-national exercise, African Lion 21 in Agadir, Morocco, while getting one’s coffee, there were many diverse, interesting members participating in the exercise also seeking a cup of joe.

People from around the world carry many different customs unique to their culture. One thing consistent among everyone in the world, is sleep. When many people wake up there is also a consistent custom shared between most cultures in the world, people need their coffee.

It is estimated that over one billion people around the world drink coffee daily. In fact, coffee has been referred to as a “universal language”. Coffee is the fuel for nations and the people that make up those nations around the world.

Coffee is not only a “universal language” because of how many people around the world drink coffee, but the opportunities sharing coffee with another gives us to get to know that person. On those mornings at the Royal Moroccan military’s Southern Zone Headquarters, people from locations such as Morocco, England, the Netherlands, Italy, Senegal, Tunisia, and the United States engage in conversation with one another. Sharing coffee with one another, not only provides a pleasant conversation and small break from the many daily activities involved with African Lion but has also become a gateway to learning about someone and their culture.

“We’re conducting exercise African Lion 21 to improve interoperability and to demonstrate the strong relationship we have with our partners”, said Brig. Gen. Aida Borras, U.S. Army Southern European Task Force Africa deputy commanding general. “Our aim is to train the range of military operations. But you’re going to see a multi-domain, multi-national exercise that involves air, ground and maritime assets with service members from multiple countries all participating as one.”

African Lion is U.S. Africa Command’s largest, premier, Joint, annual exercise hosted by Morocco, Tunisia and Senegal, June 7-18. More than 7,000 participants from nine nations and NATO train together with a focus on enhancing readiness for U.S. and partner nation forces. The annual exercise is a multi-domain, multi-component, and multi-national exercise, which employs a full array of mission capabilities with the goal to strengthen interoperability among participants.

During their down time, the over 7,000 participants had the unique opportunity to exchange more personal stories, information and culture, coming closer together as partners and connect with one another’s military and life experiences. Sometimes all it takes is a little help to break the ice, like a nice cup of coffee.
