A Hamilton, Ohio native and 2018 Fairfield High School graduate is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam (CG 54).

Marie Angela Lorenzo is a Culinary Specialist Seaman who serves onboard USS Antietam, forward-deployed to Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan.

With more than 50 percent of the world’s shipping tonnage and a third of the world’s crude oil passing through the region, the United States has historic and enduring interests in this part of the world.

“My job, as a Culinary Specialist, is to help feed the crew members on the ship. Food really brings people together and I think that doing my job helps boost the morale on the ship.”

Forward-deployed Sailors are crucial to the success of the global navy mission and earn high praise from their leaders.

“A big reason that I joined the Navy was because even though I did great in school, and got a scholarship for University of Cincinnati for neurology, I didn’t want to wake up in ten years bored with what I’m doing and ultimately wasting all that schooling and time doing a job I’m not happy with,” said Lorenzo. “The Navy is a great way for me to learn a ton of new skills while I figure out what I want to do for a career, whether it be a naval career or not.”

Sailors serving abroad in Japan are highly motivated and quickly adapt to changing conditions, explained Navy officials.

“I’ve come really far and learned a lot since getting to this command,” said Lorenzo. “When I first got here, I couldn’t even make scrambled eggs. Then they threw me in the Chief’s Mess where they have eggs to order for breakfast and I had to learn a bunch of skills really quick.”

Modern U.S. Navy guided-missile cruisers perform primarily in a Battle Force role. These ships are mulit-mission Air Warfare (AW), Undersea Warfare (USW), Naval Surface Fire Support (NSFS), and Surface Warfare (SUW) surface combatants capable of supporting carrier battle groups, amphibious forces or operating independently and as flagships of surface action groups.

USS Antietam is forward-deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations in support of security and stability and a free and open Indo-Pacific.
