Meet EM2 Sheldun Tribble! He is currently an #Instructor at the #Navy ‘s only #BootCamp .

EM2 comes from #Floresville #Texas . He came in at 23, believing he needed a foundation to build on.

“My grandparents and my dad were in the Air Force, so I’m the only one that joined the Navy. But, I chose a great path. I joined the Navy, because I saw what it provided my family, and I thought that was really cool. I wanted what they had, they were provided the opportunity to travel, and educational opportunities.”

Tribble’s first command was USS Sterett (DDG-104), where he grew as an undesignated fireman. He later chose to become an electrician’s mate.

“I think the Navy has given me a lot of opportunity to grow personally, professionally, and give me a kind of broader perspective on exactly what life is. I had a really good mentor at USS Sterett, he showed me that I could do whatever I had my mind on, they would support me.”

EM2 credits his mentor, now Chief Warrant Officer 2 Demetrius Ward, with his professional growth.

“He taught me how to be a leader of men and women. He was the one that I looked up to. Everyone seemed to gravitate towards him and he would always come through for them. If people come to me, I want to always come through for them. I feel like that’s leadership quality, I will always carry that with me.”

Tribble has carried what he’s learned with him to RTC, where he now helps make basically trained Sailors.

What do we mean when we say we produce “basically trained Sailors”? They are much more prepared for life after Boot Camp than the phrase lets on. A young recruit will be introduced to firefighting, firearms, seamanship, water survival, and basic Navy knowledge within classroom and laboratory settings.

Tribble teaches basic Navy knowledge to recruits. This “basic” information includes instructions about recognizing Navy ships, aircraft, and ranks. They are taught the NATO Phonetic Alphabet and Time Critical Risk Management. They learn American military history. Tribble also covers Naval policy and expectations for equal opportunity, Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR), and professional etiquette. Recruits are also taught skills in personal accountability, like basic personal finance, and retirement planning.

He’s found that he enjoys teaching.

“I tell recruits that you have a lot of opportunity. You just have to keep knocking on the door. If you keep knocking and knocking, somebody’s bound to answer. And then, whenever somebody answers, that door opens for you. Keep knocking, keep getting that drive, push yourself and get recognized, I think that you’ll have a lot of opportunities, not only in the Navy, but in life.

When he’s not teaching, he’s keen to watch or participate in sports.

“My favorite team is the San Antonio Spurs, I don’t think I’ve missed one dribble throughout the season. I love to watch sports and just be around that environment.”

    #Hooyah EM2 Tribble!
