Students from Wellpinit High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps visited Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, Oct. 21, 2021.

Base tours for schools in the community give students a chance to learn first-hand about the different Air Force career fields available to them.

“It was an awesome opportunity for the kids,” said U.S. Army Maj. Eric Cusick (Ret), Wellpinit High School senior ROTC instructor. “During class, we only showcase a small portion of the military, so giving the students the opportunity to see how an Air Force base operates really shows them possible careers and how portions of the military operate as a whole.”

Wellpinit High School’s students are mostly Native American and were able to intact with Team Fairchild Airmen who have similar cultural affiliations.

“With diversity and inclusion being an important topic, to not only the Air Force but also the nation, this allowed us to showcase our star performing Airmen that come from different cultural backgrounds and make a lasting impact on our community,” said Col. Cassius Bentley, 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander.

The students toured units on Fairchild including the air traffic control tower, the 36th Rescue Squadron, military working dogs, and explosive ordnance disposal.

“Being able to see the students interact with all of the Airmen and the various career fields was a rewarding experience for not only the students but also the instructors that accompanied,” Cusick said. “The students had a blast interacting with the different career fields at Fairchild.”

Showcasing cultural diversity within the Air Force to local students helps ensure they are shown accurate cultural representation while also understanding how the Air Force operates.
