SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, North Carolina – Members of the Johnson family are no strangers to the Air Force lifestyle. Three generations have worn the uniform dating back to 1951. While many families have multiple members serving simultaneously, they usually don’t cross paths while serving. However, this was not the case for Lt. Col. Nicholas Johnson and his son, Senior Airman Brycen Johnson, who were reunited at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, Oct. 19, 2021.

Nicholas is with the 455th Flying Training Squadron at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, with plans on retiring in the next three years after 30 years of service. Brycen is with the 333rd Fighter Generation Squadron assistant dedicated crew chief, just finished up his 4th year.

“Serving with my son makes me very proud; and seeing the development of my son as a professional Airman is extremely exciting for his mother and me,” said Nicholas. “I can hear the pride and excitement in his voice when he talks about his job and the team he’s a part of.”

Brycen said he was prepared for his military career since his parents were both in the military. Nicholas, his father, has been serving since 1994, starting out as active duty before transitioning to the Air National Guard in 1998. Most recently, Nicholas commissioned into active duty via Officer Training School in 2004.

Nicholas also followed in the steps of his father, who served in the Air Force for 24 years.

“There was never a dull moment,” Brycen said. “I can vaguely remember being little and sitting in the plane that my dad flew. Seeing him now around the F-15E Strike Eagles I work on everyday makes me happy.”

Nicholas said that watching his son take on a life of service to his country is a great commitment that not many are willing to do and that is extremely inspiring.

Nicholas added that he has been extremely fortunate in his career to experience many exciting challenges and opportunities. Looking back at the 18-year-old version of himself when he enlisted, he said it’s clear how the Air Force has shaped him and helped him thrive as a leader and professional.

The same holds true for Brycen and many others that take the oath to serve. Reflecting on how they have grown and learned since the beginning of their service commitment is extremely important, explained Nicholas.

Brycen added that he looks forward to furthering his Air Force career by rising through the ranks and becoming someone that other people can look up to and come to if they have questions or need help.

“I’m full of pride and am excited for the future in front of my son,” said Nicholas. “Watching him grow up, and then having the opportunity to watch him launch an F-15E Strike Eagle first hand was incredible. I cannot thank the 4th Fighter Wing and the 334th Fighter Generation Squadron enough for the chance to be able to share this moment with my son.”
