Every Tuesday and Thursday on Sembach Kaserne, Germany parents, children, and coaches meet up at the soccer field that’s tucked away between scenic rows of trees for weekly soccer practice.
These practices wouldn’t be possible or as thrilling if it wasn’t for Army Master Sergeant Edward R. Mullin.
Master Sergeant Edward R. Mullin, Operations Sergeant, coaches children from all over the Kaiserslautern Military Community in soccer. Roughly a dozen children show up for the bi-weekly practices and weekly games that are held every Saturday.
Even though you wouldn’t be able to tell from his level of expertise on the field, this year is just his first year coaching, and it happened by chance.
“My daughter wanted to play soccer this year, and when we went to the first practice there was no coach. I volunteered to coach because I was going to be there anyway and I get to spend time with my daughter.” said Mullins “It’s important for me because I get to spend lots of time with my daughter and see her learn about the sport and the importance of teamwork.”
The last game of the season is November 6th, and as that date gets closers Mullins reflected on how being a coach made him feel and
“I really enjoy being able to coach the team and hopefully I will be able to continue to coach in the future.” said Mullins. “I think it teaches the kids to work as a team.”
As the season draws gradually to a close on November 6th, Mullins reflected on his reasons and methods for coaching so he can put them to good use for the next season.
“I don’t really have a method. I’m just trying to work on the basics with them. Some of the players have played before, but for some this is their first year as well as my coaching.” said Mullins “I really enjoy being able to coach the team and hopefully I will be able to continue to coach in the future.”
