USS Bataan Celebrates 246th Navy Birthday
By USS Bataan Public Affairs
NORFOLK, Va. – The amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) held a celebration on the mess decks to commemorate the United States Navy’s 246th Birthday.
The ceremony included a speech from the Commanding Officer, Capt. Joseph Murphy III, cake cutting and a rendition of “Anchors Aweigh” by the Bataan Chief Petty Officer Selcectees.
“On this birthday, we celebrate a sense of pride in our Navy’s history and heritage,” said Murphy. “We celebrate our glorious victories at sea and honor our Shipmates who stand and have stood the watch.”
Murphy highlighted the effect naval service has on Sailors.
“No other military branch conducts missions on all fronts like the Navy does,” said Murphy. “It is the greatest force on earth, and it has the power to transform Sailors, enabling them to go beyond what they thought possible.”
On October 13, 1775 the Continental Congress voted to fit two sailing vessels with cannons and a crew of 80 to intercept transports carrying munitions and stores to the British army in America. This vote was the foundation upon which the Continental Navy grew, marking the birthday of the United States Navy.
