WIESBADEN, GERMANY -- Aukamm Elementary School 5th grader Olivia Briggs was recognized after an early- afternoon fire drill on Oct. 18, 2021, for her courageous efforts in contacting the appropriate emergency services quickly and correctly.
On Sept. 24, 2021, Olivia heard a fire alarm at a neighbor’s house. Olivia kept her composure as she contacted emergency services and her parents to inform them of the possibility of danger and fire in the adjoining duplex.
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Commander Col. Mario Washington, Lt. Col. Jon Jackson, provost marshal and director of emergency services, and the Garrison Fire Department were all on site to recognize Briggs in front of her peers and teachers.
“It cannot be overstated the importance of this young lady’s actions, because this fire had the potential to be devastating,” said Jackson.
For her demonstrated courage in a frightening situation, Jackson and the fire department awarded Olivia a “Fire Safety Hero of the Year” award on behalf of the garrison.
Garrison Commander Washington spoke to the crowd of Aukamm Elementary students and celebrated Olivia’s actions. “You can save a life by listening to your parents or your teachers, so it’s very important. Olivia is a prime example of what happens when you do the right thing and the positive impact it can have on yourself and the community,” said Washington.
Additionally, Washington called over Olivia’s parents to reiterate the pride in her actions, celebrated a few round of applauses with the students and encouraged them all to continue listening to their parents and teachers as they grow and have a positive impact in their communities
