MECHANICSBURG, Pa.- Naval Supply Systems Command Weapon Systems Support (NAVSUP WSS) submarine supply professionals met virtually with colleagues from across the United States in September at the quarterly Strategic Submarine Supply Support Review to discuss meeting the needs of the Navy’s submariners.
The Strategic Submarine Supply Support Review began in 2004 and since then the meetings have ensured a sustained high level of submarine material support.
NAVSUP WSS supports the Navy’s Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines, Trident weapons system.
Core members of the Strategic Submarine Supply Support Review include: U.S. Strategic Command; Strategic Systems Programs; Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic; Commander, Submarine Force, Pacific; Defense Logistics Agency-Maritime at Puget Sound, Distribution Depot, Pacific Northwest and Customer Operations, Columbus QM; Trident Refit Facility Kings Bay; Trident Refit Facility Bangor, NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center, Puget Sound and NAVSUP WSS.
NAVSUP WSS personnel presented at several of the sessions. Team member Bethany Wilson, a program analyst, presented a sophisticated analysis of the Trident Load List needs.
The Trident Load List consists of parts kept in inventory at two Trident Refit facilities. Having items on-hand at these locations ensure minimal wait time for submariners performing crucial and high operational tempo missions. The parts include items like seals, valves and electrical components as well as more complex and expensive items like emergency diesel generator blowers costing over $700,000. There are more than 50,000 items on the Trident Load List.
“Ensuring our submarine maintainers have the majority of the parts they need on hand locally is the goal,” said Tony Harper, NAVSUP WSS strategic weapons system division director. “By closely tracking and monitoring what their needs are, we can ensure they have the repair component right there with them instead of ordering it and waiting for it to arrive.”
The group met for two days and were able to collaborate with fleet and program stakeholders.
“Having the opportunity to collaborate with others from the community is invaluable,” said Lt. Keisha Castillo, NAVSUP WSS submarine weapons systems officer. “We look forward to continuing to work together to solve these complex supply problems in the future.”
The meeting exemplified the agency’s commitment to ensuring warfighters get the parts they need, when and where they need them, anywhere in the world.
