Fort Benning, GA – National Mammography Day is observed annually on the third Friday in October. Martin Army Community Hospital (BMACH) marked the occasion today by decking out in pink and walking a mile. Hospital Commander Col. Kevin Kelly joined the sea of pink, in his first BMACH Breast Cancer Awareness Walk.
“I really appreciate the passion that I see for getting the mission done,” said Kelly. “This is such an important part of what we do in medicine to detect disease early and treat it and to make people’s lives better.”
“Our purpose for walking is to honor and celebrate the people battling and surviving breast cancer,” added Mammography Supervisor LaShaye Hughley. “Also, to remind people to [get their] routine breast exams and mammograms.”
Early prevention is key in the fight against the second most common cancer among American women.
“To help with the detection of breast cancer early, patients should get clinical breast exams by their healthcare providers each year,” said Hughley. “Get your annual screening mammograms and report any changes you notice to your healthcare provider.”
According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.
“Mammograms are recommended in women over 40 years of age, annually,” said Hughley. “You do not have to wait for your physician to order your mammogram for you. Patients can self-refer for their routine screening mammograms each year.
“The best way to schedule a mammogram here at BMACH is to call the Mammography Department at (762) 408-2079 or 2080.”
Routine mammograms usually only take about fifteen minutes.
“But we will take as long as it takes to do a thorough mammogram,” said Hughley. “We do ask that all deodorant and powder is removed before the mammogram to avoid artifacts on the imaging.”
