American Forces Network Humphreys video section creates products that broadcast throughout the Pacific. They create news and quirky commercials that convey command messaging.
AFN Humphreys video brings a sense of home to service members and the local community through their many products.
Taste of Korea, news and features are just some of the examples they make and broadcast on TV. Tech. Sgt. Michael Mason, NCO in charge of AFN video, explains why it’s important to portray information in an entertaining way.
“Our mission is to inform and entertain,” Mason said. “If we’re able to merge these into one product then it’s more likely to be received and absorbed by our audience than if we’re just sharing information directly. If I can get you to enjoy what you’re watching, you’re more likely to watch it again or to share it with your friends and that amplifies that information we’re trying to spread.”
A large portion of the projects are also showcased on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. U.S. Army Private First Class Emily Dawson, Social Media Manager of AFN Humphreys, says social media presence is crucial in this day and age.
“Something that can prove an organization’s worth is social media presence,” Dawson said. “If you ask someone where they get their news from, most of the time they’re going to say social media. A lot of the time people will scroll through the channels as soon as a commercial comes on, but with social media it’s convenient and timely.”
AFN video production starts with an idea, which is then captured through a camera lens. The footage then goes through a tedious editing process where it is meticulously pieced together to become a cohesive story or advertisement. From there, AFN leadership critiques the product to ensure accuracy, brevity and clarity.
