The Army promotes a holistic approach to wellness. Meaning, mind and body. The new Army Civilian Fitness and Health Promotion Program now encourages employees to focus on fitness while at work.
With the program, civilian employees can use up to three hours a week to participate in activities that are specifically targeted at improving fitness levels or body conditioning such as; running, walking, swimming, weight training, aerobics, biking, stress reduction/ relaxation exercises (yoga, meditation, Tai-chi).
The Army believes that, “Employees afforded an opportunity to participate in fitness and health promotion programs experience increased readiness and resiliency, enhanced morale, increased productivity, reduced sick leave use, and increased job and life satisfaction,” states the Army Directive.
Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) Wellness Coordinator Michele Dominguez said, “My goal has been to help YPG employees help themselves. Your body is your most priceless possession; We have classes to help you take care of it and now the Army is giving you the time. There are no excuses left, the time in now to take care of you.”
To take part in the program there are a few steps to follow and rules to keep in mind.
• Must have supervisor approval
• Must sign participant agreement with wellness coordinator
• Can use up to three hours a week, with no more than one hour in a day
• Can combine with lunch
• Employees must report to their workstations before and after each authorized fitness period
• Specific times for participation will be dictated by mission requirements
This time can also be used to join the monthly fun runs and other wellness events hosted by the post.
YPG’s three cantonment areas each have a fitness center that employees can utilize for their workouts.
