Two members of the United States Air Force Honor Guard transferred into the U.S. Space Force during a ceremony Aug. 10 at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling.
Lt. Col. Nathan Zahn, U.S. Air Force Honor Guard commander, and Maj. Justin Boyd, United States Air Force Honor Guard director of operations, took steps toward the next chapter of their careers after nearly 20 years of service each in the Air Force. Col. Michael Zuhlsdorf, JBAB and 11th Wing commander, presided over the ceremony.
“I was in the hangar when then President Trump signed the United States Space Force in the law, and the excitement in that hangar on Joint Base Andrews was palpable; you could feel it,” Zuhlsdorf remarked during the transfer ceremony. “People were excited we were going to be standing up this new service, and they knew it was going to take incredible talent to bring it to light. Those Guardians are incredibly important, and need strong senior leaders like you two to help them get through as they continue to recruit the best and the brightest.”
Zuhlsdorf went on to express his gratitude for what Zahn and Boyd have accomplished so far during their time with the wing, as well as excitement for their continued journey.
During the transfer ceremony, the new Guardians reaffirmed their commitment to the armed services by taking the oath of office. Both then donned Space Force-compliant uniform tops complete with Space Force patches.
“Space is one of those critical aspects of our life, from not only our civilian sector, but every single computer you touch,” said Boyd. “There's a satellite somewhere behind that chain, controlling the precise timing to make everything work smoothly. From the military aspect, there are a number of systems and capabilities that are employed to make what we do work every single day.”
Boyd also spoke on pursuing one’s individual interests, as he has, to amplify one’s time in service.
“Explore other options and push forth for what you think is right, what you think is interesting, and that will help yourself, your family, the country, and your service,” said Boyd. “Ultimately, you can get to wherever you want to go.”
Zahn echoed Boyd’s statements, as well as spoke on his feelings of transitioning military services.
“Bittersweet is the right word,” said Zahn. “You're excited for what's ahead, but also, you already miss what you're walking away from that was a significant part of your life. … I think that's the best way to describe it and this wonderful day.”
Zahn and Boyd are only two of the many former Airmen from the appropriate Air Force space-related career fields to join the USSF ranks. Over the next 18 months, many more Airmen will transfer over and join them as new Guardians.
