Story by Gunnery Sgt. Jeffrey Cordero

Operation Allies Welcome - Operation Allies Refuge

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – U.S. Marines and sailors with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), coupled with elements from 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines (V 3/6) deployed this past weekend from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina to Fort Pickett, Virginia in support of Operation Allies Welcome, a mission to provide Afghans temporary housing, sustainment, and support inside the United States in response to the State Department’s request for Department of Defense (DoD) assistance.

The Secretary of Defense has approved for the Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, to provide to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) temporary housing, sustainment, and support inside the United States for Afghan personnel. DoD will provide support for at least 50,000 individuals at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible. Support will be provided on DoD installations and potentially at contracted non-DoD land and facilities.

Approximately 120 service members from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit from Camp Lejeune will deploy to Fort Pickett to assist in these efforts as part of the task force located there.

U.S. Northern Command is the Department of Defense's lead combatant command for this mission in the continental United States and is providing oversight in support of the Department of State and Department of Homeland Security. U.S. Army North, as U.S. Northern Command's Joint Force Land Component Command, is the lead operational command for this mission. The task force, Fort Pickett will provide the housing, medical, logistics, and transportation support.
The 26th MEU is proud to join task force Fort Pickett, U.S. Army North, U.S. Northern Command, and the Department of Defense team, in supporting the State Department with this unique and historic mission. Marines and Sailors assigned to the 26th MEU coupled with Marines from 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines will focus on the safety, security, and other life support activities in support of Operation Allies Welcome.
