Chaplain Creasman Feature Story
Story by: Senior Airman Kevyn Allen
OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- When times get tough, and Airmen face adversity, they might find themselves in need of someone to talk to. Someone to help them through a difficult time and offer words of advice.
Chaplain Sharad Creasman has devoted himself to being one of those people, always ready to respond to the needs of his fellow Airmen.
“For me personally, to hear stories from people, about how they’ve overcome stuff, and see how they’ve pushed forward, and how they’re excited about life.” Creasman said. “That’s what pulls me into this position every day, it’s the people and what they offer.”
Creasman enjoys getting to know Airmen and hearing their stories, but he also understands that it can be hard for Airmen to make the decision to reach out to a chaplain. He makes it a point that he’s always available, and ready to listen whenever and wherever they are comfortable meeting with him.
“I’ll meet you wherever you want to, we’ll pick up a blade of grass together it doesn’t matter.”
Even a chaplain’s life can get tough, which is why they need to find ways to cope. But Creasman finds strength in the Chaplain Corps so he can return that strength to the Airmen that rely on him.
“When I take off this uniform I make sure I take it off. I might have to put it back on, but to leave work where it is and say, there are a ton of us to take care of a situation.”
When he puts the uniform back on, he’s ready to serve Airmen once more. Creasman makes sure to leave rank out of things when reaching out to Airmen.
“You take the opportunity to smile and say that in this space it’s just you and I, we’re here together” said Creasman. “Yes I have a rank on my chest, but that’s one of the fun things about being a chaplain. You don’t have to call me nothing, just know that I’m here with you.”
