KANEHOE BAY, Hawaii – Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 37 rescued two fisherman whose boat capsized off the island coast of Kauai after responding to a request for assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard’s 14th District at approximately 10 p.m., July 22.
The rescued men were subsequently transported to Lihue Airport in Kauai County and received emergency medical services.
“I had just walked in from our last flight of the day when my duty officer said, ‘We’ve got a rescue,’” said Lt. Cmdr. Adam Rollins, an MH-60R Seahawk pilot assigned to HSM-37 and flight commander of the rescue mission. “So we turned right back around and were flying off toward Kauai in about 50 minutes.”
The crew initially received a search pattern from the Coast Guard boat that was already on station. After discovering the capsized 14-foot Boston Whaler, the HSM-37 crew expanded their search toward the coastline.
“Within two minutes of shining our search light along the shore, we saw a guy waving his arms and knew that had to be them,” Rollins said.
Once the two stranded men were located, Naval Aircrewman (Helicopter) 2nd Class Isaac Lynn was lowered from the MH-60R by Naval Aircrewman (Helicopter) 2nd Class Cameron MacArthur, the crew chief, to assess the situation.
“When I got down there, I asked if they were hurt and the first thing they said was, ‘We’re ready to go home,’” Lynn said. “So MacArthur lowered the rescue basket and I took them up one at a time.”
Rollins said he credits the successful rescue to the strong partnership the Navy has built with the Coast Guard.
“We have done multiple search and rescues with Coast Guard Station 14 now, and it just goes to show that we really are a force multiplier and an asset that can integrate with them at a moment’s notice,” he said. “When we check in on station to assist with a search, they treat us like their own. It’s a tightly-integrated partnership.”
