KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan — The Canadian Forces Health Services transferred command of the Role III Multi-National Medical Unit to the U.S. Navy's 575th Area Support Medical Company on Thursday, Oct 15.
The United States takes over command of Role III MMU for the first time since February 2006, when the CFHS took over for the U.S.
The commander of CFHS, Col. Danielle Savard, showed her appreciation to all the service members who have worked at Role 3 under her command.
"I am really proud of everyone working there," said Savard. "It has been a very challenging but rewarding journey."
Since the CFHS took command, Role III MMU has received over 42,000 patients and performed nearly 4,500 surgical procedures.
Navy Capt. Darrin Via, the incoming commanding officer of Role III, hopes to continue the work the CFHS has already started.
"Col. Savard and her team did a phenomenal job," said Via. "They are some tough shoes to fill but I believe we have the right personnel to fill them."
The commander of Regional Command South, Major General Mart de Kruif was in attendance for the transfer.
"I'm sure the Captain and his personnel will live up to the great work of their predecessors," said de Kruif.
