FORT BELVOIR, Va. (July 29, 2021) — Four Regional Health Command-Atlantic Soldiers are competing to win the U.S. Army Medical Command’s 2021 Best Leader Competition July 25-30 at locations on and around Schofield Barracks, Honolulu, Hawaii.

The RHC-A team includes Spc. Bricen Bolsen, Kenner Army Health Clinic, Fort Lee, Virginia; Staff Sgt. Andrew Pitts, Public Health Activity-Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Capt. Ryan Rose, Dental Activity-Fort Benning, Georgia; and 1st Sgt. Yakima Sanderlin, Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

“Each of you has already demonstrated that you are a leader, so I have confidence in your abilities to lead and take care of our Soldiers,” said Brig. Gen. Mary Krueger, RHC-A commanding general. “Let’s show them why we’re the A-Team, and how we’re ‘Ready Now!”

MEDCOM will also select its Soldier and Noncommissioned Officer of the Year award winners from the winning team. The winning team will represent MEDCOM at the Army’s Best Warrior Competition this fall and compete for a chance to win either the Army’s Soldier or NCO of the Year award.

“The Best Leader Competition is about utilizing esprit de corps to build combat readiness and preparedness,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Diamond D. Hough, the Army’s senior enlisted combat medic and the MEDCOM’s senior enlisted advisor in a MEDCOM news release.

“The competition hones in on our Soldier’s technical, tactical and critical thinking skills as they compete as a team. The concept underscores confidence and trust,” added Hough. “A crucial benefit for the NCO is focus on how to plan, prepare and execute training.”

To test the Soldiers’ skills, they’re competing in a water survival challenge, an obstacle course, day and night land navigation, a “stress shoot” and a mystery event.

Each of MEDCOM’s four regional commands, RHC-A, RHC-Central, RHC-Europe and RHC-Pacific, sent a team to compete in and around the jungles of the 25th Infantry Division’s home.

Prior to competing in Hawaii, the RHC-A Soldiers competed with more than 60 Soldiers who comprised 17 regional teams April 26-30 at Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Competition and the MEDCOM Soldier and NCO of the Year award winners are set to be announced during an award ceremony that will be held at Tripler Army Medical Center, Hawaii, July 30, 2021.
