BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — 2nd Lt. Janele Sharp of the 117th Air Refueling Wing received the National Guard Association of Alabama Outstanding Company Grade Officer of the Year Award during the National Guard Association of Alabama-Enlisted National Guard Association of Alabama combined conference at Orange Beach, Alabama on July 10th, 2021.
Sharp is the Medical Administrative Officer at the 117th Medical Group. She is quick to emphasize that the award reflects on the group’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing vaccine rollout.
According to Sharp, the initial response was centered on “keeping everyone on base safe while we were able to still continue our […] critical missions that couldn’t stop, even with COVID going on. The protocols and policies that we put in place for the base enabled us to carry out those missions with no impact to mission assurance.”
As greater base operations resumed, the group had to adapt to an ever-changing mission scenario. The medical group coordinated with Army and Air National Guard Units to ensure that airmen had access to the vaccine as early as possible. Sharp coordinated the wing’s contribution to the vaccination rollout while also ensuring success in more routine duties, such as annual health screenings and deployments.
“We’ve got people out doing COVID [response], we’ve got people deploying […] and at the same time we never ceased our readiness efforts for the wing,” Sharp said. “Recently we achieved an Individual Medical Readiness level that we haven’t in the previous two years.”
