VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (NNS) – Master-at-Arms Chief Petty Officer Duane Jones, assigned to Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC), received a commission through the Limited Duty Officer (LDO) program during a ceremony held at Port Hueneme on June 30, 2021.
Jones is a native of Tucson, Arizona and played professional hockey for 6-years before enlisting in the Navy in 2010. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia University. His past duty assignments include Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily, Italy, and Naval Station Everett, WA.
Capt. Jeffery Chism, commanding officer, NBVC, presided over the ceremony and shared his personal remarks.
“I developed a professional bond with MAC Jones during his time as the kennel master while certifying our military working dogs to ensure they are mission-ready,” said Chism. “I appreciate his leadership during discussions about how we can improve the command, care for Sailors, and train our service animals.”
LDOs are technical managers who fill leadership and management positions that require technical background and skills not attainable through normal development within other officer designators. The term "mustang" is used in the complimentary sense as slang for an officer who was a prior enlisted Sailor.
“The appointment to this office is an extension of the executive branch and is different than the enlisted oath as it is appointed to an office that is held by our Congress,” Chism said. “This office upholds a special trust and confidence with America that places you under the constitution whose course it directs.”
The ceremony followed time-honored Navy traditions with the retiring of the Chief Petty Officer cover, pinning of officer rank and the Silver Dollar Salute.
Jones addressed the audience while thanking the participants and his mentors.
“My service and the mission are still the same for me,” said Jones. “Being a student and a teacher but more importantly, mastering yourself and who you truly are before mastering anyone is guidance that I would like to give to junior-enlisted Sailors.”
NBVC is a premier Naval installation composed of three operating facilities: Point Mugu, Port Hueneme and San Nicolas Island. Strategically located in a non-encroached coastal area of Southern California, NBVC uses its superior geographical location as a key element in the DoD mission infrastructure supporting 80 tenant commands, three warfare centers, Unmanned Aerial Systems and the Pacific Seabees.
