PACIFIC OCEAN – Engineering department Sailors assigned to Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS O’Kane (DDG 77) participated in engineering training team drills, June 16, 2021.
Engineering training team drills use scenarios and repetition to make Sailors experts at responding to real casualties.
“We perform these drills to get proficient at combating engineering system casualties such as fires and flooding inside the engineering plants,” said Senior Chief Electrician’s Mate Michael Pendergraft, a divisional leading chief petty officer of the engineering department.
Pendergraft stressed that the training teams design the drills to be challenging for seasoned and junior Sailors alike, in order to ensure watch standers can successfully respond to any potential casualties that might arise in the plant.
“The engineering training drills help us build muscle memory,” said Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Mechanical) 3rd Class Graison Rabowski. “At first, I made a lot of mistakes. Now, I feel more confident in my ability to respond to casualties. Repetition truly is the key.”
During O’Kane’s most recent drill, participants responded to a simulated fire in a gas turbine engine and flooding in a main engine room.
“I am very satisfied with the way the watch team responded to the simulations,” said Pendergraft. “We will continue to run more drills like this regularly. After all, we train how we fight, and when the time comes, we need to be able to fight the ship.”
Firefighting and damage control are integral to ensuring Dewey can operate throughout the world with the necessary readiness, flexibility, and agility to respond to the changes in the operational environment.
O’Kane is underway conducting routine maritime operations in U.S. 3rd Fleet. As an integral part of U.S. Pacific Fleet, U.S. 3rd Fleet operates naval forces in the Indo-Pacific in addition to providing realistic and relevant training necessary to flawlessly execute our Navy's timeless roles of sea control and power projection.
