Moody’s Youth Center hosted their annual teen shadowing day June 16, 2021, at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia.
The event consisted of 21 teens from surrounding areas visiting various work centers on base and participating in interactive and informational activities.
“We encourage all career routes in our teen workforce readiness program so that all teens from all backgrounds feel supported in their future goals,” said Heather Sheppard, 23d Force Support Squadron youth programmer. “We hope that by providing these opportunities, we are helping develop today’s youth into tomorrow’s doctors, military members, engineers.”
The list of jobs teens can choose from have been accumulated over time based off the teen’s interests. One teen interested in fitness shadowed Airmen at the Freedom One Fitness Center and shared a little bit about her experience.
“Today’s been fun,” said Anaya Webb, a teen participant. “I’ve been getting more into working out so I chose fitness so I can see what people are doing and to see how it can help me. I learned a lot and I feel the other teens will learn a lot about their jobs, too.”
Teens were finally able to safely participate in the event after last year’s cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Our teen program has been shut down since the pandemic began, so this is a great leap for us with it being our first event since our re-opening,” said Sheppard. “We’ll keep moving forward with this tradition, and the next one will be held in the summer of 2022.”
The following paragraphs are from Abby Hamblin and Taylor Cates, public affairs teen shadow participants.
Today teens from several different locations came to Moody Air Force Base to shadow workers in their day-to-day lives. The jobs included firefighters, pilots, marketing specialists and more. I got to see some of the different jobs there were.
During this experience, I feel as though I’ve learned things people wouldn’t learn after a life time of work and experience. I learned things not only about public affairs duties but the other jobs as well, anything from how to put a splint on a femur fracture, to how to fly a helicopter. Seeing how other people and teens react and act within jobs makes me more confident on picking something to do with my life.
