Fort Smith, AR – The second Flight Commander’s Course was held June 14-16 at the Nature Center in Fort Smith.
The Flight Commander Leadership Course concept got its start in June 2018 after the Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. David L. Goldfein announced an initiative to revitalize squadrons. He tasked an Air Force team to do an Air Force-wide review. One item identified was squadron leaders not feeling empowered and the lack of training or education for young officers.
“The 188th Wing’s goal is to make sure our potential leaders get the resources and the knowledge they need to make them successful at their job,” said Lt. Col. Gregory Johnson, the 123rd Intelligence Squadron commander and the course coordinator.
The course can cover topics like preparing for command, emotional intelligence, followership, new thinking for new problems, developing full-range leadership, ethical leadership, communication within command, developing others, building and busting teams, leading change, conflict management, and senior leader perspectives.
“Attending the course and gaining these skills will help our future leaders bring value to our organization, but also help transition from being a member of their organization to being part of the command team,” said Johnson.
