Administrative staff decides to lift the mask requirement in the city center starting Friday, June 18, 2021, due to declining incidence levels and further easing steps in the state.

Press release: City stops mask requirement in the city center
In recent weeks, the seven-day incidence in the city of Mainz has fallen continuously. For two weeks it has been stable below 50, currently at 38. Due to this positive development, the administrative staff under the leadership of Lord Mayor Michael Ebling decided in its meeting today to lift the mask requirement in the pedestrian zones of the city center as well as on the station forecourt starting Friday, 18 June 2021, 00:00 a.m. Until now, a mask had to be worn in these areas from 8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. except on Sundays and public holidays. Recently, the city had already lifted the mask requirement on the banks of the Rhein River. Yesterday, the state of Rheinland-Pfalz announced further relaxations for the mask requirement in schools and outdoors.

Lord Mayor Michael Ebling and Head of The Department of Public Order, Manuela Matz, emphasize that in view of falling incidence and a rising vaccination rate, the city can take this step towards more normality in everyday life with a clear conscience. "A few months ago, we had to tighten the rules due to sharply rising numbers. Fortunately, we noticed a positive development in recent weeks and have already made some relaxations. Now it is time to give the citizens a little more relief with the relaxation of the mask requirement in the city center as well as at the station forecourt," said Ebling and Matz.

A lot has been expected of the people of Mainz in recent months. If the overwhelming majority had not complied with the restrictions, we would not be talking now about further easing. "The abolition of the mask requirement outdoors and the relaxations already initiated are the result of the Mainzers, who have followed the rules together with us. It is important to us to thank the people for their patience, understanding and participation," explained the Lord Mayor and Matz.

Nevertheless, Ebling and Matz appeal to the population not to become careless now: "Remain prudent and comply with the rules that are still in effect. We are on a very good path and the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter and brighter, but the pandemic is not over yet. Please keep your distance and continue to wear a mask where there is crowding, for example in crowded situations or in heavily frequented places and areas. This is how you protect yourself and others."

In order to overcome the pandemic, the continued success of the vaccination campaign is crucial. "We would like to encourage all those who may still be hesitant to get vaccinated. With the end of the prioritization, everyone now has the opportunity to register and get vaccinated. Only the highest possible vaccination rate will give us back our normal lives. And that's exactly what we all long for," say Ebling and Matz.
