GOLDWATER AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ariz. – A member of the 161st Air Refueling Wing was recognized as Airman of the Year during the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military’s Affairs 2020-2021 Civilians, Airmen & Soldiers of the Year Banquet May 22, 2021.

Staff Sgt. Jaymond Bodine, a non-destructive inspection technician with the 161st Maintenance Squadron, was surprised by the honor as it was his first major award on the state level, and attributes much of his achievement to the personal stake he puts into his work and his place in the squadron.

“The number one thing I think I’ve done to be recognized is the responsibility I take over my work,” said Bodine. “I’ve never hesitated to take ownership over certain projects. If I see errors, even things that might be considered minor, I’m not afraid to approach leadership or talk to the guys in the shop to figure it out.”

Being proactive is an important part of being a leader, something Bodine wants to inspire in others now that he’s a noncommissioned officer. This includes reaching out to other shops and improving the communication needed to address any potential challenges.

“We’re told all the time to be proactive,” Bodine said. “You’re rarely going to be told to be less.”

While his job performance heavily contributed to winning Airman of the Year for Arizona, it was also his adherence to the Whole Airman Concept that stood out. Bodine mentors at his local church youth group, pursued higher education, and helped his neighbor during a time of great need, demonstrating that Airmen can make a big impact at home as well as at work, regardless of rank.

“I think one of the keys to being an Airmen is just being a good person,” Bodine said. “Among family, among community, among friends, just be active. Be a positive asset to our sphere of influence and just make sure we’re a positive impact within that sphere.”

During this year’s banquet, members of the 161st Air Refueling Wing were also recognized as Arizona’s Junior Officer of the Year, Noncommissioned Officer of the Year and First Sergeant of the Year.
