MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- II Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) and Marine Corps Installations East-MCB Camp Lejeune hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the new II MEF Operations Center on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, June 14, 2021.
Guests at the event included local community members, Mrs. Janet Bradbury, president of the Jacksonville-Onslow County Chamber of Commerce; Sheriff Hans J. Miller, Onslow County Sheriff’s Office; congressional office representatives; and current and former II MEF and Camp Lejeune leaders.
The new headquarters building will replace II MEF’s current home in the Julian C. Smith Building, a converted military hospital built in 1942. The new operations building will be over 180,000 square feet and is scheduled for completion in 2024.
“This new MEF and Division headquarters will be a part of what allows us to train, employ and recover more efficiently, both from a management and leadership perspective,” said U.S. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Andrew M. Niebel, the commanding general of Marine Corps Installations East-Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. “Today is the dawn of a new era for II MEF, it’s a start that will be a few years in the making with the reconstruction and realignment of command and control across the force.”
Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command, Mid-Atlantic (NAVFAC), responsible for Navy and Marine Corps contracting and engineering, partnered with Archer Western for the project.
“We aim to preserve and perpetuate II MEF’s legacy with this building, purpose built for modern warfare command and control,” said U.S. Navy Capt. Tres Meek, commanding officer, NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic.
U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Brian D. Beaudreault, commanding general of II MEF, and the keynote speaker at the groundbreaking ceremony, said the location will be essential to warfighting, planning and coordinating forward deployed units.
“We are an asset of the American people and appreciate the wind in our sails to know our community cares,” Beaudreault said. “I want to say thank you to all our distinguished guests and I can’t wait to come back in three or four years for the ribbon cutting and see this beautiful building be occupied with motivated Marines and sailors.”
