Harvey Wright was elated Saturday night at Redstone Gateway just outside Gate 9.
He won the Commander’s Cup for being named Best of Show at the car show during Redstone’s celebration for the 246th Army birthday. His 1929 Ford Sport Coupe with a rumble seat took first place in the car division. He also placed second for motorcycles with his 1974 Kawasaki 900 Z1B.
“I don’t believe this,” Wright, 86, of Huntsville, said. Originally from Illinois, the electrical and mechanical engineer retired from Boeing in 2000. He has lived in Huntsville since December 1978 and he worked on the Space Station.
His wife of 65 years, Marilyn, died three years ago. Their daughter, Vicki, resides in Denver, Colorado.
Garrison Commander Col. Glenn Mellor and Command Sgt. Maj. Juan Jimenez presented the trophy to Wright. Seventy-seven people preregistered for the car show.
“This is our first annual event but we are definitely going to do this again,” Mellor said. “There are some beautiful cars out there.”
In each division, first place won a $200 gift card; second place, a $100 gift card; and third place, a $50 gift card.
