    USARPAC NCO of the Year

    JBER, AK, UNITED STATES

    06.14.2021

    Story by Sgt. DeMarco Wills

    United States Army Alaska

Sgt. Adam Krauland, a cryptologic linguist from 1st Squadron (Airborne), 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, won in the NCO category of the 2021 USARPAC Best Warrior Competition.

Krauland’s next challenge is the 2021 Army Best Warrior Competition where he will compete against NCOs from across the Army later this year.

The USARPAC BWC 2021 is an annual week-long competition including competitors from across multiple USARPAC units. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s competition took place across the Indo-Pacific with physical events taking place at the Soldiers’ home station.

“It is an honor to be considered among the best my unit has to offer,” Krauland said.

The noncommssioned officers and junior-enlisted competitors were evaluated in several categories such as general military knowledge, basic Soldier skills, and physical fitness.

The competition started on June 1 with a 13-mile foot march and finished the day with a written test and essay.

Early the next day, Krauland and the other BWC competitors met at Training Area 412 on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska to do Land Navigation.

To finish out the day, the competitors were evaluated on Warrior Task and Battle Drill lanes which tested Soldiers on tasks such as assembling and disassembling weapon systems, search a detainee, and move under direct fire.

Krauland said, “I think one of the worst things you can do is underestimate the task you have to do at each of these lanes. When it is a competition like Best Warrior, it is those small details you overlook that can determine a one or two point difference between winning and losing. You have to will yourself to stay alert and present in the moment.”

The competitors started the day three with the Army Combat Fitness Test near the Buckner Fitness Center.

“As competitors, we are all physically fit. The BWC does not just test you on your ability to compete at your best. All of these events build on top of one another. This competition demands you bring the same level of motivation and energy even when you feel completely exhausted.” Krauland said.

Then, they moved to the Grazelka Range to maneuver and engage targets using individual movement techniques while firing multiple weapons systems from different firing positions.

“This probably the event I looked forward to the most,” Krauland said, “It is always great being able to come out and demonstrate my shooting skills.”

Finally, the competitors participated in a virtual knowledge board presided by the USARPAC Command Sergeant Major to test their general military knowledge, military bearing, and review their overall appearance.

“From my experience competing in Best Warrior, I learned you have to keep pushing yourself. It is easy to step back, rest, and take it easy. However, this competition is a time when you need to push yourself,” Krauland said.
