    Federal Vaccine Response

PUEBLO, COLORADO -- The federally supported Pueblo, Colorado Community Vaccination Center completed its mission June 14, 2021 after administering more than 24,800 doses of the COVID-19 vaccination since it opened April 14, 2021.

The Department of Defense provided Soldiers from multiple military installations to support the Federal Emergency Management Agency vaccination center at the Pueblo, Colorado State Fairgrounds.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to come to a smaller town to reach the public with a vaccination,” Spc. Alexandra Gray, a combat medic assigned 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, from Fort Carson, Colorado. “They have less access to things like vaccinations here, so we had a much bigger impact because it’s not like Colorado Springs or Denver.”

With support from various federal, state, local and partner civilian agencies, the deployment has truly been a whole-of-government response to rapidly vaccinate Colorado residents.

“We are honored to have served alongside the DoD Soldiers supporting vaccination efforts,” said Jeremy Utter, FEMA acting branch director for the Pueblo Community Vaccination Center. “The professionalism and dedication to duty of the men and women of 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 2SBCT, 4th Infantry Division, and the other Soldiers from across the country helped to make this site the success that it was.”

The DoD’s unique large-scale logistical and medical capabilities played an integral role in the government’s fight against COVID-19.

“I’m thankful that we were able to make a difference in the local community here,” said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Catalina Dominick, squadron medical officer of 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 2SBCT, 4th ID, assigned to Fort Carson, Colorado. “We were able to bridge the gap between Soldiers and civilians by working with FEMA and Altura Health, and it was a pleasure working with everyone.”

Moving forward, Soldiers will return to their respective military installations and resume their day-to-day missions.

“I’m so proud of my Soldiers for volunteering for this mission, and working so diligently throughout to help vaccinate the Pueblo community,” said Dominick.
