2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division

FORT BLISS, Texas – The final flight of Soldiers with 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, ‘The Iron Brigade’, 1st Armored Division were welcomed home by family members and senior leadership during a ceremony near the brigade’s footprint on June 6, 2021.

Approximately 200 Soldiers made up of elements of 1st Battalion, 35th Armored Regiment; 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, and 47th Brigade Support Battalion made the journey back to Fort Bliss from U.S. Army Central Command area of responsibility in support of Operation Spartan Shield.

2ABCT deployed as part of a rotational combat brigade to support regional partners sustain stability in the region with roughly half of the over 4,000 Soldiers in the unit sent forward.

“I am super proud of our team,” said Lt. Col. Carlos Flynn, 1-35 AR commander. “Throughout the deployment we operated in multiple countries, worked with our partner nations and had the opportunity to execute different mission sets that a lot of Soldiers don’t normally get to do. We also assumed all the brigade’s missions as they re-deployed and this was an opportunity for a lot of young Soldiers to step up and show their leadership skills.”

The process of getting the Soldiers from their arrival back on American soil to their families and loved ones was made possible by an effective re-deployment team lead by 1st Squadron, 1st Calvary Regiment operations sergeant major, Sgt. Maj. Christopher J. Belch.

“Receiving the returning Soldiers was a smooth process,” said Belch. “The most important thing we all stayed focused on was reuniting our ‘Strike’ Soldiers quickly and safely with mitigating for COVID, with their families as soon as possible and I think we accomplished that mission successfully.”

Now that all personnel have returned to Fort Bliss, the brigade will transition to receiving all deployed equipment, maintaining their cohesive team, and staying trained and ready for future missions.
