    U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Area

Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael El-Hasan, originally from Jacksonville, Florida, is an Aviation Maintenance Technician and has been aboard USCGC Hamilton (WMSL 753) for three months as part of the cutter’s aviation detachment.

El-Hasan joined the U.S. Coast Guard to do something exciting with his life and advance himself professionally. He was on Hamilton’s most recent deployment in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea and visited several different countries.

“I think our presence in the U.S. Navy Sixth Fleet area of operations really helped foster relationships,” he said. “The operational tempo was challenging, but we showed how relevant the U.S. Coast Guard is in other areas of the globe.”

His favorite part of the deployment was the family attitude on Hamilton, making new friends, and meeting foreign partners.

“When you get those orders to deploy, come into it with an open mind and expect for things to evolve constantly,” he said. “The experiences and memories you get are well worth the time away from home.”

Aviation maintenance technicians perform ground handling and servicing of aircraft and conduct routine aircraft inspections and aviation administrative duties. AMTs inspect, service, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair aircraft engines, auxiliary power units, propellers, rotor systems, powertrain systems, and associated airframe and systems-specific electrical components. They service, maintain, and repair aircraft fuselages, wings, rotor blades, and fixed and movable flight control surfaces. As part of the aircrew, AMTs hoist rescue swimmers and survivors, drop supplies and emergency equipment, and assist pilots.
