FORT KNOX, Kentucky -- Since the reactivation of V Corps, two of its top priorities have been readiness and modernization to ensure V Corps Soldiers will be lethal, protected, and situationally aware. With that in mind, the V Corps medical team received essential medical field equipment on Wednesday, June 2, including some of the nation’s best military grade products to help ensure improved resiliency and quicker mental and physical healing for V Corps Soldiers.

The V Corps Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion senior medic, Sgt. Daniel Halsey, along with Maj. Frank Wanat, V Corp’s medical logistics officer, worked with Paul Flemings, a United States Army Medical Materiel Agency (USAMMA) regional manager, who understands the importance of distributing medical supplies for the Corps.

“I was in the Army for 26 years as a medical logistician,” said Flemings. “I’ve deployed multiple times in my career, so I know how important it is to have the right medical capabilities, and having everything you need is of the utmost importance.”

According to the USSAMA website their mission is to provide medical logistics support, including fielding, sustainment, medical maintenance, and management of readiness-enabling contingency programs. The USSAMA team that worked with V Corps traveled from Maryland and West Virginia to Fort Knox.

“Most of the equipment that we provide is lifesaving equipment such as an apparatus, defibrillators, and ventilators,” said Flemings. “Our shipments consist of all of the things that help support and provide Soldiers with all of the medical capabilities to sustain, take care of, and prevent loss of life.”

Flemings briefed V Corps Soldiers on how to properly unload the equipment in the morning.

The V Corps medical Soldiers working with their USAMMA counterparts, started opening and sorting the brand new medical equipment, which arrived in large green and brown crates, at the V Corps motor pool. Some of the larger boxes required several Soldiers to work together underneath Sgt. Halsey’s watchful eye to ensure a proper inventory of the tactical combat casualty care supplies was completed.

“This is the final fielding that we need to become fully mission capable,” said Halsey. “This equipment fielding will bring us to mission capable status so that we can support medical operations for V Corps.”

Many of the crates contained bandages, tourniquets, compress gauze, and chemical protective kits.

Major Wanat paid close attention to the distribution process to ensure shipment labels and numbers were correctly annotated while Soldiers moved quickly around him to unload and sort the medical supplies. He then reviewed the important information with Mr. Fleming before allowing the team to enjoy a much-earned lunch break.

“These sets of medical equipment are going to allow our folks to train,” said Wanat. “We have two sets being fielded forward and are currently in Germany right now. Those sets will be located in Poznan, Poland, ready to go.”

The team of medical experts from V Corps and USAMMA are making sure that V Corps Soldiers will receive the most modern and quality-driven standard of care from their medical providers. The increase in medical readiness and modernization will ensure the corps is prepared for its future exercises and missions. The saying “It Will Be Done” will live through the actions of the Victory medical team who provide for and support the Corps missions.

“Our goal is to take care of V Corps Soldiers, and to make sure that if Soldiers are sent into harm’s way, that they can be taken care of so they can come home safely to their families” said Flemings.
