Story by Lance Cpl. Symira Bostic

Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point

Before dawn on June 6, 1944, more than 130,000 allies stormed the beaches of Normandy in an effort to liberate France from Nazi Germany’s rule. Within weeks, one million men would have landed to aide in the efforts. 414,000 men would honorably give their lives. By August 1944, all of northern France had been liberated, jump-starting the beginning of the end of the war in Europe. D-Day remains the largest amphibious invasion in military history.

The Normandy beach landings prevented Hitler from sending troops from France to build up his Eastern Front against advancing Soviets. May 8, 1945, Nazi Germany surrendered when Hitler committed suicide.

Thousands of men courageously gave their lives to protect the liberty of the nations. Today, we remember their courage and honor their sacrifice.
