By: Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Elisha Smith

SAN DIEGO – Rear Adm. Dan Martin relieved Rear Adm. Timothy Kott as Commander, Carrier Strike Group ONE (CSG-1), during a change of command ceremony aboard the Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), May 28.
Kott is a 1990 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York. He holds a Master of Science in Financial Management from the Naval Postgraduate School and a Master of Science in National Security Strategy from the National War College. Kott assumed command of CSG-1 in June 2020. During his time in command, CSG-1 units completed the Optimized Fleet Response Plan maintenance phase and successfully executed Basic and Advanced Phase Training, to include continued integration with the Air Wing of the Future comprised of F-35C Lightning II, E-2D Advanced Hawkeye and CMV-22B Osprey all fully ready to deploy in support of CSG-1’s upcoming deployment.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity and privilege to have led the dedicated and professional group of Sailors who serve across the ships and squadrons of Carrier Strike Group ONE” said Kott. “They have met every challenge head on, and have prepared with a clear focus and drive towards deployment readiness. I am confident they will do great things under Rear Adm. Martin’s leadership.”
During the ceremony, Martin said he was honored to for the opportunity to command at the Strike Group level, and is looking forward to leading the CSG-1 team.
“The Sailors in CSG-1 represent the best of our country, and are prepared to excel in an unpredictable environment.” said Martin. “I’m confident in the operational abilities, determination, and dedication in each and every one of them.”
A career FA-18 pilot, Martin has served on numerous aircraft carriers. He previously commanded VFA-37 and Carrier Air Wing 8 and most recently served as the Senior Military Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs.
“We are going to continue to pursue a culture of excellence, rather than a culture of compliance,” said Martin. “We will remain prepared to meet any threat to our nation with steadfast resolve. Rear Adm. Kott has handed me the keys to a Cadillac that looks and runs great. I cannot thank him enough for his dedication in preparing CSG-1 for deployment.”
CSG-1 was established in 1930 and serves as one of five U.S. Navy carrier strike groups currently assigned to the U.S. Pacific Fleet. As the U.S. Navy’s first maritime naval aviation formation, CSG-1 sustains lethal naval combat forces across all to maintain naval superiority and fleet readiness. CSG-1 is currently embarked on Vinson.
