U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Three service facilities at the Air Force Academy are now equipped to assist customers suffering invisible wounds.
The workforce at the Airman Family Readiness Center, bowling center and community center library used training materials designed by KultureCity, a nonprofit that certifies organizations to assist people suffering sensory overload, PSTD, traumatic brain injuries and other unseen injuries.
“Acceptance and inclusion continues to be a concern for individuals with special needs,” said Lisa Taylor, family support coordinator for the Academy’s exceptional family member program. “The KultureCity certification puts us one step closer to making a positive impact in the lives of these individuals.”
Staff at these agencies trained to recognize customers needing assistance with sensory related needs during a certification process that can take several weeks. At least 50% percent of the staff must pass the training for a facility to be certified.
The three facilities, attached to the 10th Air Base Wing – the Academy’s host unit - are equipped with sensory rooms, sensory bags with noise canceling headphones, fidget tools, verbal cue cards and weighted lap pads.
Melanie East, senior library technician, organized the certifications.
“As a library, we want to make sure all are welcome and accepted with little to no barriers,” she said. “It is extremely important we make sure we continue seeking ways to encourage all to feel comfortable and appreciated.”
