Capt. Christopher Marvin relieved Capt. Edward Crossman as commanding officer of the Ticonderoga-class, guided-missile cruiser USS San Jacinto (CG 56), during a change of command ceremony held today aboard the ship at Naval Station Norfolk.
Crossman led San Jacinto through a six-month deployment with Carrier Strike Group 10. While deployed, San Jacinto served as the Air and Missile Defense commander for the strike group in support of Operation Sentinel and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.
"I can't begin to explain the amazing self-sufficiency, drive, resiliency and ability to succeed through the most adverse of conditions the Gunslingers showed in this tour,” said Crossman.
“Regardless of what was thrown their way... deployment, surge deployment, COVID, no-ports, limited logistics... They were dependable in executing the mission, professionally, every time. They absolutely knocked it out of the park!
“I am so proud to have had a chance to serve on such a fine ship, alongside such amazing Sailors. Victory is Certain!"
Marvin graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1996 and commissioned through Officer Candidate School in 1998. His previous assignments include serving as the Engineering Officer aboard USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) and USS Chosin (CG 65). He went on to serve as Executive Officer aboard USS Halyburton (FFG 40) and USS Somerset (LPD 25).
During his most recent sea tour, he served as the Commanding Officer of USS Detroit (LCS 7) Gold Crew, in Mayport, Fla.
USS San Jacinto is named for the battle of the same name that took place near Houston and led to Texas gaining independence from Mexico. The crew’s motto, deeply echoed by their work and success, is “Victory is Certain.”
