[The Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) salutes Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPIHM) through a series of articles recognizing FLETC staff of Asian and Pacific Island descent. The AAPIHM national campaign theme for May 2021 is "Advancing Leaders Through Purpose-Driven Service." FLETC reflects on the national history which includes generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who helped shape this nation.]

The daughter of Yoshiko Tanaka and Ralph Tolar, a U.S. Air Force veteran, carries on childhood principles instilled in her as a child. One of the family special principles is that of being respectful to everyone, in all cultures…all walks of life…all backgrounds.

Peggy Wallace, their daughter, puts this to use as being one of the first and continuing persons many of the students attending the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) see throughout their training.

Wallace has been the Training Technician for the Training Management Division for two years at FLETC, but she has a longer history of work with the agency.

“I worked as a contractor here for 12 years, which has given me the insight into what I am doing now for the students and staff,” Wallace said. “I handle administrative tasks long before a face can be placed with the students upon their arrival. This includes setting up electronic class files, describing expectations of being at FLETC, providing schedules, and gathering other personal data from them in order to make their training here successful.”

Working as an examination proctor for each of the written tests the students’ take is another aspect of the many jobs Wallace does. Even on the rare occasion of a test failure, Wallace sets up coordination between the instructors and the student for after-hours remediation, which follows with the remedial exam.

The FLETC-Glynco campus has been a family affair for Wallace as her husband, Jeff, now retired, was formerly employed here teaching computer forensics.

“My husband is also retired Army, having worked in the Criminal Investigative Division (CID),” Wallace said. “We spent 10 years in Germany before coming to Glynco, which allowed me to spend time in Baumholder, Stuttgart and Heidelberg. I was a stay-at-home mom raising our family, but I was active in school volunteering while there.”

Wallace was familiar with the way of military lifestyle of travel being with her parents. But she was able to settle for a time in Fayetteville, North Carolina where she graduated from Cape Fear High School and got her training in paralegal studies from Fayetteville Technical Community College.

In her spare time, Wallace enjoys walking in the great outdoors, which she says gives her an opportunity to ‘clear her mind’ during her normal 5-mile trek. She is also fond of tennis, as proven by the leagues she has been a member of while in Germany and on St. Simons Island.

The trait of respect is something that has become so ingrained with Wallace and her brother Charles, that she has passed that down to her children Nic and Jake. “My mother was respectful to everyone, not only because of her Japanese culture, but for the sake of doing the right thing,” Wallace said. “We strived to get along with everyone, especially since we were in the midst of so many different cultures as we traveled around in the military. It’s just a natural for my family.”

Wallace has many aunts, uncles and other relatives in Hokkaido, Japan, whom she would like to visit when an opportunity presents itself.

But for right now, she enjoys being at FLETC.

“I enjoy the diversity of students and staff here,” Wallace said. “Working with so many different divisions is a pleasure and I can say that I have made lifetime friends here at FLETC.”
