An Air Force expert in air traffic control presented details about multiple benefits and opportunities of integrating remote and mobile remote tower systems during a virtually delivered Navy Warfare Development Command (NWDC) Guest Speaker Series event May 20.
Nicole Valentine is a retired Air Force master sergeant who served 20 years. She is currently the deputy director of business development at Advanced ATC. Valentine says Advanced ATC is the only non-Federal air traffic control training Academy in the U.S. and the only Academy in the world to train under both the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) principles. Her presentation promoted an understanding of the newest technological developments in the field and explained their importance to NWDC members.
“I want my audience to fully explore each advantage and not just focus on the field of air traffic control,” Valentine said. “This is an important approach in terms of an overarching surveillance and security perspective because mobile remote towers provide more than the ability to control airplanes from a geographically separated location.”
Mobile remote towers simultaneously give warfighters an ultra-high definition, real-time sight picture of the ongoing operations. The airport images are redirected to the decision-makers through the integration of a very small aperture terminal (VSAT) technology. A VSAT is less than three meters tall and is capable of both narrow and broadband data to satellites in orbit in real-time. The data can then be redirected to other remote terminals or hubs around the planet. The presentation also included video of a tactical/rapid deployable remote system prototype that can fit inside a C-130 and be deployed and operational from anywhere in the world within minutes.
