She stopped breathing and had no pulse.
While at his hotel, U.S. Army Capt. Brian Clever, a physician’s assistant supporting the Community Vaccination Center (CVC) at Miami Dade Community College (North Campus) in Miami, heard someone in distress, April 30, 2021.
“I was in my room and I started to hear cries for help coming from the hallway,” said Clever. “I left my room and followed the cries to the elevators.”
Clever saw a group of people with a woman who was unresponsive on the hallway floor.
“I saw one man calling 911 and talking to the woman’s friends getting information about her,” said Clever.
As the man was speaking with emergency services, Clever began assessing the woman’s condition and found irregular breathing.
Five minutes later she stopped breathing and had no pulse.
“I immediately began to perform CPR for about seven to ten minutes until paramedics arrived,” said Clever. “Once the paramedics had control and were transporting her, she still didn’t have a pulse.”
“My information was taken by the police,” said Clever. “A few hours later I received a call and was informed the woman had been resuscitated and in stable condition.”
“Captain Clever executed at a high level to save a life that day. He reacted quickly, kept calm under pressure, assessed the situation, and did what needed to be done,” said U.S. Army Capt. Joseph Berman, operations officer of the Miami CVC. “His actions reflect great credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.”
Clever serves in the 82nd Engineers Battalion, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, out of Fort Riley, Kansas, and currently is working in the Miami CVC where he assists in ensuring vaccine quality and safety, answering patient’s medical questions, and providing medical response to adverse reactions.
“I’m happy I was able to receive the training to help the woman in the hotel and to be here in Miami assisting in providing the COVID-19 vaccine to the local community here” said Clever.
U.S. Northern Command, through U.S. Army North, remains committed to providing continued, flexible Department of Defense support to the Federal Emergency Management Agency as part of the whole-of-government response to COVID-19.
