A Military Spouse Appreciation Day event was held May 7, at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, by the 86th Force Support Squadron Airman and Family Readiness Center.
Military Spouse Appreciation Day is a national holiday to celebrate the sacrifices made by military spouses on the Friday before Mother’s Day in May.
The 86th FSS organized a scavenger hunt that allowed participants to have fun and learn along the way.
“Participants are going to go to all 19 resource tables and receive something really neat from each organization,” said Gwen Lee, flight chief of the Airman and Family Readiness Center.
The event had several supporting partners including United Services Organization, the New Parent Support program, American Red Cross and many others.

“With COVID-19 restrictions, we’re planning them every ounce of every minute that we can,” said Lee.
In the previous year they hadn’t been able to celebrate military spouses beyond providing refreshments.
“This year’s event is the biggest we’ve organized for Military Spouse Appreciation Day,” said Don Murrary, team lead consultant of the Airman and Family Readiness Center.
Organizing events like these takes time and lots of planning. For events like this they have to ensure there is enough space for social distancing, and organizers must regulate mask wearing.
“We all have to come together with the same goal in mind and for today that was celebrating military spouses, and then bring all the helping agencies together so we can do that today,” said Lee.
While events need to follow COVID-19 guidelines, the 86th FSS is still trying to coordinate events for military-connected individuals.
“Everything we can do in every facet of celebrating our military, our families, spouses, and children, we are taking advantage of that,” said Lee. “COVID-19 is not going to stop that.”
