Handling logistics for Defender Europe 21 – no problem for the Knight’s Brigade

DURRES, Albania – When it comes to delivering combat power in the theater, the 16th Sustainment Brigade’s deeds speak louder than words.

U.S. Army Col Scott Kindberg, commander of the 16th Sustainment Bde, also known as the Knight’s Brigade, said his organization has an interesting role in Defender Europe 21. As the largest sustainment brigade in Europe, the unit is the only European-based sustainment brigade and provides a full range of support to U.S. Army Europe units.

“The 16th does it, from the Port all the way to the foxhole, distribution and sustainment along the way,” said Kindberg.

Under the jurisdiction of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, the 16th SB is based out of Baumholder, Germany.

As the largest sustainment brigade in the U.S. Army, the unit provides operational, strategic, and tactical sustainment support to organizations throughout the U.S. Europe and Africa Command area of operations, including units deployed throughout the world.

This includes providing essential items, such as ammunition, food, fuel, and maintenance.

The unit’s reach extends from Estonia, all the way to Greece. In addition, there are units belonging to the brigade located in Kosovo, Croatia, and Macedonia, said Kindberg.

When it comes to the Soldiers, Kindberg praised them and their commitment to providing the essentials needed to keep the various units functional.

“The Soldiers are phenomenal at opening port convoy support centers,” said Kindberg. “Soldiers get excited to be able to travel and do their mission and that’s why they joined the military.”

“If that doesn't get a logistician excited, then I don't know what does,” said Kindberg.

Their motto exemplifies the very nature of the unit, said Kindberg.

“Our motto is ‘deeds, not words,’" said Kindberg. “And I do firmly believe the 16th Sustainment Brigades’ deeds speak louder than its words.”

“We deliver combat power,” said Kindberg.

DEFENDER-Europe is an annual large-scale U.S. Army-led, multinational, joint exercise designed to build readiness and interoperability between U.S., NATO and partner militaries. This year, more than 28,000 multinational forces from 27 nations will conduct nearly simultaneous operations across more than 30 training areas in more than a dozen countries from the Baltics to the strategically important Balkans and Black Sea Region.
