FORT LEE, Va. (May 3, 2021) – Sydney A. Smith was inducted into the Senior Executive Service and at the same time became the new Army Logistics University president during a ceremony April 30 at the Army Logistics University green auditorium.
She is poised to oversee the university’s mission of providing professional education and leader development for military and civilian logisticians and related professionals from the Army, joint, interagency and international communities, to include sustainment and logistics, operations research, and acquisition leader education and training programs.
A native of Abingdon, Smith was selected for the SES in April. She replaced Michael K. Williams, who died May 27, 2020.
Members of the SES (about 6,800 career, non-career and limited appointees) serve in the key positions just below the top presidential appointees and alongside general officers. SES members are the major link between these appointees and the rest of the federal workforce.
Smith, a former Army quartermaster, is no stranger to Fort Lee, having served here twice during her career.
“She is absolutely the right person for the job and has all the attributes to be outstanding and very successful,” said Maj. Gen. Rodney Fogg, commanding general for Combined Arms Support Command.
Smith will focus on training and leadership development, continuing to affect Army readiness and our ability to win on the battlefield, he added.
“Sydney is absolutely ready to make an impact right now,” Fogg said.
After taking the oath of office, Smith thanked numerous people for helping her throughout her career and also shared some thought on her new role as the president of ALU.
“When we talk about SES, the word that I key on is service and I believe that is the most important part of what we do,” Smith said. “We have to translate our senior leaders’ intent and their priorities into achievable results.”
Smith added that ALU will provide Army leaders with every single tool and opportunity to build not only their technical and tactical competence but also to reinforce the character and commitment to teamwork that will enable them to lead their units to success.
Smith was commissioned in 1992 as a quartermaster officer through the ROTC program at Davidson College, Davidson, N.C.
She has commanded at multiple levels to include: 404th Army Field Support Brigade, Joint Base Lewis McChord, Wash.; 244th Quartermaster Battalion, Fort Lee; and the 528th Quartermaster Co., Fort Lewis, Wash. She also served as a rigger platoon leader and Class IX Platoon Leader in the 507th Corps Support Group, Fort Bragg, N.C.
Key staff assignments include: director, Capabilities Development Integration, and later director, Fielded Force Integration, CASCOM; director, contingency basing and operational energy, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army, Installations Energy and the Environment, the Pentagon; CJ4, Combined Joint Task Force 82 (RC-South), Kandahar Afghanistan and G4, 82d Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.; support operations officer, 307th Base Support Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fort Bragg, N.C. and COB Adder, Iraq; logistics planner, Multinational Corps Iraq and XVIII Airborne Corps, Baghdad, Iraq and Fort Bragg, N.C.; deputy plans officer, JTF Aguila (hurricane relief), 593d Corps Support Group, El Salvador; and logistics plans officer, Special Operations Theater Support Element, Republic of Korea.
Smith’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star (2OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (4OLC), Senior Parachutist Badge, and Parachute Rigger Badge.
ALU is an element of CASCOM. It trains roughly 20,000 logisticians from throughout the country and more than 80 countries on an annual basis. It is comprised of three colleges and an academy for military and civilian logistics leaders.
