315th Airlift Wing to kick off RiverDogs season opener with flyover

    CHARLESTON, SC, UNITED STATES

    05.04.2021

    Story by Capt. Shane Ellis

    315th Airlift Wing

315th Airlift Wing Reservists flying a Joint Base Charleston C-17 Globemaster III will help the Charleston RiverDogs baseball team kick off their 2021 season opening home game with a C-17 flyover this evening at about 7:30 p.m. over Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The Reserve aircrew, from the wing’s 701st Airlift Squadron, will be comprised of pilots, loadmasters and support crew. Several Charleston area civic leaders are also scheduled to join the aircrew as they fly over the field which will take place as the final lines of the National Anthem are sung in The Joe.

The game, against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, is the first time the RiverDogs have hosted a game since Sept. 1, 2019 – 611 days since their last game day.

The 315 AW performs event flyovers like this as added readiness training for aircrews who are often relied upon to be over target at a specifically coordinated time – especially when air dropping troops or vital supplies to troops on the ground in overseas military operations. As a bonus, these flyovers help the public see the excellence of our men and women in uniform who serve to protect freedoms daily around the world.
