GREAT LAKES, Ill. – The annual disaster response and recovery exercise, Citadel Gale, is set to kick off the week of May 3, 2021 to prepare staff for potential impacts on infrastructure during and after a weather event.

The exercise simulates a storm system whose evolution provides an opportunity to review operating procedures and ensure staff are prepared for the upcoming storm season, including procedures for recovery from major weather events, which includes lifting evacuation orders, reopening the installation, and conducting damage assessments.

Citadel Gale 21 is an essential part of maintaining and improving installation support and recovery efforts before, during and after major weather events. Precautions have been implemented to minimize the threat of COVID-19 to participating personnel. The health and safety of our people remain the top priority throughout the exercise.

As the "Quarterdeck of the Navy,” Naval Station Great Lakes enables and sustains Fleet, Fighter and Family by providing superior, integrated Base Operating Support to over 50 tenant commands, including Recruit Training Command, the Navy's only boot camp. Naval Station Great Lakes is also home to 80 percent of the Navy's surface warfare specialty training. Naval Station Great Lakes is the largest military installation in Illinois and the largest training station in the Navy. The installation includes 1,153 buildings with 39 on the National Register of Historic Places. Naval Station Great Lakes sits on 1,900 acres and uses 50 miles of roadway to provide access to the station’s facilities.
