    Story by Cpl. Thomas Spencer

    I MEF Information Group

The 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor was a wakeup call for the U.S. military. Failure to recognize simple warning signs led to a disastrous strike on American soil. As a result, The Marine Corps stood up Marine Corps Counterintelligence in 1943.

The original mission identified how the Corps would provide support to the Naval Investigative Service and participants served with the Office of Strategic Services. In 1948, the Marine Corps designated the formal military occupational skill (MOS) Counterintelligence. Today, the 0211 occupational field is split into two job skills Counterintelligence (CI) and Human Intelligence (HUMINT).

CI Marines work with friendly forces, gather surveillance and protect the nation’s security using sabotage and deceit. Human Intelligence focuses on gathering information from human resources. They also aid in identifying prisoners of war and interrogating foreign detainees.

CI/HUMINT is currently looking for applicants who meet the eligibility requirements. Staff Sergeant Connor Roper, the applicant processing section staff noncommissioned officer with 1st Intelligence Battalion, I Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group, said they are looking for Marines who are independent and interested in a high operational tempo.

The primary goal of CI/HUMINT is to assist commanders in identifying and eliminating threats on and off the battlefield before the fighting takes place. During deployments they are often conducting Military Source Operations, (MSO) debriefing officers and filling out reports.

“When active wars are going on we are the ones supporting the commanders,” said Roper. “We are the ones providing them with intelligence, so that they can better eliminate the fog of war.”

The occupation has a high operational tempo and when not actively deployed they are preparing for the next deployment. This includes conducting Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape training or the possibility to attend Airborne or “Jump” School.

CI/HUMINT has no limits for education and learning. The MOS education program includes seven months of military occupational schooling and upon graduation Marines become accredited central intelligence agents.

Interested Marines on Camp Pendleton can attend the 0211 information brief held every Friday at 9 a.m. in building 160313.
