Kyiv, Ukraine – As part of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Strategic Seminar on April 29, 2021, Maj. Gen. David Tabor provided remarks at the National Defense University of Ukraine. The topic of discussion centered around opportunities and challenges of Special Operation Forces integration and development.
At the conclusion of the seminar, Maj. Gen Tabor presented the Legion of Merit to Gen. Lt. Ihor V. Lunyov for exceptionally meritorious service as the first commander of the Ukrainian Special Operations Command. Gen. Lt. Lunyov's visionary leadership, guidance and direction established Special Operations Forces as the fifth branch of the Armed Forces in Ukraine. He worked with conventional force commanders to inform and integrate Special Operations Forces qualification, training and preparation for deployments. Additionally, Maj. Gen. Tabor presented a Ukrainian Colonel with a Meritorious Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious service as the liaison officer during Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.
This visit remains a historic reminder of how the dedicated resolve of Allies and partners with a common purpose and shared vision builds proven partnerships that endure. Seeking new training opportunities that allow Allies and partners in the nation to refine interoperability in the region is a critical step in maintaining a heightened level of readiness.
